Section of Operative Dentistry and Endodontology

Introduction
In the section of the operative dentistry and endodontology, we provide students with the art and science of diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in dental caries, pulpal and periapical diseases. The concept of minimal intervention dentistry has evolved as a consequence of increased understanding of the caries process and the development of adhesive restorative materials. On the other hand, any direct exposure of the pulp to the oral environment involves a risk of destructive inflammatory breakdown. Pulpal wounds have little capacity for self-healing unless treated properly. Therefore, the development of biocompatible materials that induce a dentin-pulp complex is preferred. In addition, it is essential to carry out further research to determine the precise clinical applications of regeneration-stimulating factors in the treatment of pulpal and periapical lesions. It is speculated that recent developments in biomedical engineering, basic biology, and medicine will enable experts to induce cell-based regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex and periapical tissues.

Current Research Projects
In the section of the operative dentistry and endodontology, following researches are done:
1. Immunohistochemical study on pulpal and periapical diseases.
2. Development of regenerative medicine for pulpal and periapical diseases using regeneration-stimulating factors.
3. Development of strontium-containing new bioactive glass.
4. Development of dentin-pulp-complex regeneration therapy.
5. Salivary levels of cortisol and chromogranin A in patients with periapical infection.
6. Histologic evaluation of the effects of Emdogain gel on injured root apex.
